Alexandra Rubinstein

Overview
Alexandra Rubinstein is a conceptual artist working in painting, drawing and mixed media. She immigrated to the U.S. from Russia in 1997, earned her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University in 2010, and has been based in New York since. Inspired by the arduous experience of immigrating on the cusp of puberty, she focuses on the intersection of culture, gender, and power. By combining mundane and familiar images with the explicit, she creates a new narrative, challenging social constructs. Her perspective and commentary are often expressed through men’s bodies, making them subject to judgment and scrutiny, and letting the cis female figure get a much needed break.
