Norberto Spina
Drawing from archival images, old family photographs, moments of daily life, historical and religious iconographies of Italian culture, Norberto Spina’s practice explores autobiographical and collective memory. Like fragmented memories which prove difficult to visualise with clarity, Spina’s imagery presents oblique lashings, sharp and material strokes of oil, acrylic and marker pen that build and at the same time conceal the image in a continuous act of formulation and negation. His layered cross-hatching technique gives the picture plane an idiosyncratic gestural texture.
