Engaging with themes like simulacrum, fantasy, belief systems and tragedy, it is an emotive and agitated response to a rapidly changing world, a world that with the presence of technology continually blurs lines between history, fact and fiction.
Each element of Jess’s practice, whether it be painting, sculpture, film or installation act as playing pieces in an evolving and self-referential arena of fantasy, illusion and poetry. Toying with ideas about space, both within the physical world and within the traditional frame of the painting, symbols and imprints of lyrical gesture are tools in discussing the links between narrative and the way we live our lives and construct identities.
Narrative and repetition create a link to art history and explore the way the reproduced image affects the way we understand reality. Both symbols and gestures act as a link to the historical. The work is an investigation into the belief that each unique experience is a collection of an individual's previous experiences- always under the shadow and influence of that which has already shaped us.
In reflection of the methods of creation, the work mutates as you experience it with perspectives, grounds and figures morphing from abstractions.
The tropes of art history are important tools to her visual language, referencing past movements exposes a reflective fascination with the ancient and historical. The forms evolve amongst lyrical abstraction while reference to body parts, animals and logos are driven by a love of science fiction, the poetic and macabre.
Uninterested in image making, the explorative and playful methods evoke turbulent and sometimes confusing creative experiences that border on the theatrical. Although the metaphysical effects of the materials may be seductive, the results remain mostly anxious and highly disputable, reflecting an unsettled view of the postmodern experience. We are hoping to reinstate a balance of power. Allowing established artists to shoulder emerging artists. 50% of sales of works sold by an established artist, will be distributed entirely to all the emerging artists involved. This redistribution of wealth offers a new outlook and model that is fundamentally for artists, by artists, creating an alternative system of support.
