Born 1993 in Lima, Peru. Alonso Leon-Velarde is an artist who’s primary focus is Painting and Drawing. His works' pictorial resolution is filtered and framed by sifting eclectic and geolocated material, using an adaptive semiotic logic that is associative rather than descriptive. One of the recurrent qualities in the work, appearing in recent paintings and drawings, is the idea that a “character” can be understood both as Hieroglyph and “personaje” (protagonist). Made with sharp and organic movements, these forms usually find their place at the center of the work. The action happens at the periphery of the form, sometimes erecting itself against the edges of the canvas, and others being contained by the rectangle. Through non-representation devices a visceral and painterly recollection of these stimuli emerges, all jostling for attention.
Relating painting to nature rather than painting from nature, image is not a picture so much as an interface, an existential provisionality, something imagined rather seen. Leon-Velarde received a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and Goldsmiths University (2016). He has been included in exhibitions at El Instante Fundacion, Madrid; Whitechapel gallery, London and Ginsberg Galeria, Lima.
