This painting is part of a series that Payne is making based on a character from a short story that she has written. The short story is a folkloric tale about a woman who falls in love with an imagined creature; it is a story about loneliness, empathy, domesticity and love. In this piece, Payne focuses on the human character in the story; depicting the woman coming to terms with the realisation that she’s been in a dissociative state whereby she has imagined her impossible lover. The work shows her fighting/interacting with herself in an act of simultaneous care and violence. Here, Payne depicts the woman literally pulling herself out of the ground with the background of a gardenscape in motion. However, it also looks as if the woman is gently placing her own severed head on the ground.
