Ivie Bartlett
Ivie Bartlett, a photographer and visual artist hailing from South East London, dedicates her practice to honouring and uplifting the queer and trans communities of London.
With a profound focus on the narratives of Black trans individuals, Bartlett's practice shines through. Using 120mm and 35mm film, Bartlett captures intimate portraits of Black trans individuals, showcasing the beauty and unwavering resilience of the communities that have nurtured her.
Central to her practice is the desire to address the historical gaps in photographic records of queer and trans people. Consequently, Bartlett predominantly works with analogue photography, infusing her creations with depth and significance. Bartlett playfully incorporates references to art history, demonstrating a nuanced understanding and appreciation of the artistic lineage that precedes them. Beyond representation, her work explores themes of sensitivity, utopias, and euphoria, inviting viewers to engage with these emotional and visionary concepts.
Upon completing their studies in Fashion Photography, Bartlett experienced a sense of disillusionment with the fashion industry. This led them to shift their focus towards highlighting and amplifying the talent, beauty, and distinctive visual expressions of the communities she belongs to.
