In the summer of 2020 I was in Fire Island, spending more time outdoors because of the pandemic, I began contemplating the landscape as a stand alone subject matter. I painted flowers for the first time in a lush garden tended by an older queer couple. This is where I made the painting ‘Lilies’ which was the image inspiration for this monotype. In the winter of 2021 I was invited to the Anderson Ranch to make a series of monotypes. Over the course of a week I worked closely with master printer Brian Shure, and with his help made over 30 monotypes. The monotype process echoes my own loose and gestural painting language, but allows for a more structured contemplation of the image with each pass through the press.
