In this particular work, Sterling uses comedy, her own brand of cartoonish slapstick, as well as theatrical gore, to channel complex emotions about the nature of power and the patriarchy. Here, faceless figures poke, prod and chop pallid, pink sausages that are splayed out across the table and hanging down from the ceiling. On the right, a cleaver hangs suspended after committing an act of dissection and, on the left, a mallet rests coolly in a hand as it waits to smash down on a piece of pink meat. At the top of the composition, an upturned, pointed finger wrapped in a bloodied bandage seems to mirror the chopped sausage laying on the butcher's table. Blood seeps in from the edges and splatters about. Here, Sterling uses this imagined space of butchery and slaughter to enact violent fantasies around race and revenge.
