In my work I portray images of ‘non-places’ such as airports, shopping centres and fast-food outlets. For ‘The Future of Loneliness’ I have painted a supermarket at night with empty shelves, and an almost empty hostel bar. I intend the images to be relatable, yet not necessarily recognisable as specific places. The people in these spaces are not meant to be read as specific individuals, but rather archetypes of the city. I try to avoid obvious location-specific details. In these paintings I am ultimately concerned with the human condition and transcending specific time and place.
I work from candid snapshots, which I sketch from to finalise the composition and translate the reference photographs into paint. This process helps me decide what to leave out and what to include. Once I have finalised the composition and palette, I work these into larger paintings on canvas. I use a limited palette and work mostly wet-on-wet to emphasise painterly brushwork and a sense of time.
