A ‘Scope’ (noun) is a measurement of time and expanse. This painting showcases a recorded duration of time, hence the landscape orientation as it mimics a traditional linear narrative- beginning, middle and end. This painting is on the precipice, full of ammunition moments before a release. There is a ferocity in the marks, as well as an element of censoring outbursts, areas of violent application are softened by quieter areas of uncertainty. The haptic application records the dialogue of exchanges and negotiations between artist and materials. The scale of this painting showcases the physical labour of its creation through the vast size of canvas and the amount of ground covered with paint. The energy exerted through application is captured through the tactile appearance of the paint, with remnants of fingerprints and corporal gestures. The physicality of the viewer having to walk along the painting, enduring the work from start to finish, mirrors the process of how the work was created. The piece is titled ‘Scoping’ (verb), meaning an ongoing, never ending measurement of this time and expanse, best describing the painter’s practice.
