In her first work since her residency in Berlin at Eigen Art+Lab, Elsa Rouy continues to explore new processes and materials that she developed during that time. Using charcoal and sandpaper to form different textures; the surface of the work is dynamic and varied with a mix of smoothly painted areas and rougher uses of brushwork.
Rouy explains that the colour scheme and the distinct black and white cut on the leg is taken from various depictions of Jesus and Saint Sebastian throughout history. For this painting, Rouy has collaborated with Solomon from S/JF perfumers to develop a bespoke scent for the painting. The work is both a visual and olfactory experience as the canvas is perfumed with a naturally derived scent of rot and blood. Rouy explains that the smell will fade as it is natural, but for Saints and Sinners it will be applied to the stretcher bars to create a multi sensory experience for the viewer.
