Sweet Anise, Uprooted was made during a period of great turbulence for Hatta. Having separated from her partner and travelling between London and Kuala Lumpur, Hatta felt like she was moving in fragmented storyboards, not really aware of what's going on around her but hyper aware of her feelings. At this time, Hatta felt like their home was uprooted, hence the hands plucking at the flowers that are native to her two hometowns (Kuala Lumpur and London). The piece depicts tears and visible sadness through the figure crying as well as crushed up disfigured/destroyed flowers (with latex). The translucency of the figures alludes to the fleeting moments of being neither here nor there.
