The paintings are both stills from the film ‘The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover’ by Peter Greenaway. I started by finding stills which I went on to crop and distort adding a level of violence to the imagery in the way its cut and sequenced – in this case the large hands in movement separated from their bodies. I think both paintings have a certain menace to them, for example in ‘I hope you are hungry’ the scale of the piece and act of chopping are blown up into a violent action, the knife isn’t visible within the blur but we see the chopped after effects. I wanted to add in a piece of ceramic as I like having them under the paintings, I think it informs the paintings meaning and especially with ‘I hope you are hungry’ the painting situates itself in a kitchen. A rat is the last thing a kitchen wants as it represents a failing of safety, poison and illness. The names of all the pieces are quotes from ‘The Cook, the Thief….’
