This work depicts an image of a small tree, in the middle of a common, with expansive and far reaching roots. Inspired by the Peasants Revolt of 1381 and the agrarian socialism of the political group the Diggers (founded in 1649), the piece explores the necessity of collective effort, community, and the sharing of resources in the face of the rampant individualism and inherent selfishness encouraged by global capitalism. Ward argues that the felling of the tree by the sinister figures is a representation of the powerful forces that undermine efforts towards socialism at every turn.
