The Neon Hieroglyph: Astrolatrous Communes IV is a continuation of Tai’s larger installations, which were created during the same 6-year research arc as underpinned Your Arms Outstretched Above Your Head, Coding With The Angels at Gathering. The larger installations were maps/floorplans of the cities of Tai’s speculative future, “an expanded adaptation of Christine de Pizan's 1405 pioneering proto-feminist book, The Book of the City of Ladies.” Tai used the structure of an allegorical city of women to “explore ‘feminine’ subjectivity and experience, through a gothic/science-fiction lens, adopting Pizans’ medieval conception of history where historical events, fictions and myths are entwined.” Tai continued this research into what became Your Arms Outstretched Above Your Head, Coding With The Angels, and the series of bas-relief works that The Neon Hieroglyph: Astrolatrous Communes IV belongs to are echoes of these speculative cities.
