Diatoms are micro-algae that nourish the sea with oxygen and they are a major component of plankton in the ocean. When the light reflects on them, makes the transparent water appear bluish. Planet Earth looks blue from space thanks to diatoms. Because the cell walls are made of inorganic silica, they can be preserved up to tens of millions of years. They are a tool for monitoring past and present environmental conditions.
“The music of the water sounds sometimes melodic, sometimes heartbreaking”.
