Overview

Amymay's practice addresses internal conflict rooted in the comparison of her past and present and evokes the experience of her childhood, a time she draws inspiration from.

Amymay George is an artist from Hastings who moved to London to pursue her art practice. Signature motifs appear throughout Amymay's work, anchored in specific memories and particular places, and revolving around the creation of art as therapy.

Amymay's practice addresses internal conflict rooted in the comparison of her past and present and evokes the experience of her childhood, a time she draws inspiration from. Amymay's paintings are reflective of her younger self, a self before any trauma. Her paintings serve as a collage of nostalgia for the present and past.

With her practice taking form primarily in painting, subconscious scapes are collaged from fragments of memory and visceral emotion. The immediacy of Amymay's practice dictates what the subject may be in that moment, this often changes throughout the painting and a pattern emerges of layering over or covering up areas to 'redo' them. The childish quality to the vibrant colours and characters through the work always refers to something deeply personal to Amymay, and there is always something uncomfortable and disturbing underneath the fascia of the painting.
