Alonso Leon-Velarde’s primary focus is Painting and Drawing, thinking of himself as an internal voyager, a painter with a mind in exile. His works' pictorial resolution is filtered and framed by sifting disorganized, eclectic and geolocated material, using an adaptive semiotic logic that is associative rather than descriptive. Through non-representation devices Leon-Valarde contemplates a type of syncretism through sight and site.
A visceral and painterly recollection of these stimuli, all jostling for attention, enable the image to integrate via colour and surface. Incorporating the esoteric and psychological, Leon-Valarde is interested in an existential provisionality, proposing what happens when a sort of impression or preconceived notion of something changes.
BEGIN AGAINAs society shifts, the art world shifts. We are on the cusp of change. 13 - 27 Aug 2020This is a time to stop, reflect, create dialogue, and put our words into positive action. To begin again we must shoulder each other, listen to each other, work together and collectively change together. As the newest generation of art collectors, we urge you to collect from this exhibition. The revenue made will support The Free Black University and the newest generation of artists.
